Depending upon the degree of anxiety you are suffering the doctor will usually prescribe a number of anti anxiety drugs that would help you fight and win the battle against anxiety attacks. It is important when you are under medication with anti anxiety drugs to be extremely careful about the exact dosage and method in which you are taking the drugs. There are quite a few different anti anxiety drug options that are available today, and they are usually very successful.

Anti-Anxiety Drugs

Benzodiazepines and azapirones are mild tranquilizers used to treat the symptoms of anxiety and panic. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, the most commonly reported side effects of anxiety medications are headaches, nausea, stomach upset, dizziness, and sexual dysfunction. Here is some information to keep in mind when taking anxiety medication: Be patient - It takes time for most anxiety medications to reach their full therapeutic effect.

Anti-Anxiety Drug: Xanax

Xanax is in the class of benzodiazepines (common brand names include Xanax, Klonopin, and Valium). Xanax is one of the largest branded products and has been approved since 1981 to treat anxiety. The generic name for Xanax is alprazolam, it is a sedative similar to Valium. Xanax will cause drowsiness and may cause dizziness. It is also sometimes used as a sleeping pill. The class of benzodiazepines are addictive substances. The sudden withdrawal from Xanax can be extremely unpleasant for those individuals who suffer from serious dependency when placed on therapeutic doses of this drug. Xanax is a medication you CANNOT just stop taking all at once. Do not take ketoconazole (Nizoral) or itraconazole (Sporanox) during treatment with alprazolam without first talking to your doctor. Do not take alprazolam if you have narrow-angle glaucoma. While the half-life of this drug is shorter than that of Valium and Klonopin, Xanax is extremely useful for stopping anxiety attacks when they are in full flare, and in preventing them from occurring in the first place. As always discuss with your physician about anti anxiety drug options and the possible side effects.

Anti-Anxiety Drug: Buspar

The other widely used Anti-anxiety Drug is Buspirone (BuSpar), which is not a Benzodiazepine. BuSpar is the brand name for a medication often prescribed to patients suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It is most commonly used to reduce fear, tension and anxiety, but is sometimes prescribed also for aches, pains, fatigue and cramps from PMS(premenstrual symptoms). The generic name for BuSpar is buspirone hydrochloride. Although there is no direct evidence that Buspar causes physical dependence or drug-seeking behavior, it is difficult to predict. It is best to talk with your doctor about the possible side effects and the level of dependence when seeking treatment for anxiety. Be sure to tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, as well as overthe counter medications, to aviod potential drug interactions.

Other Drugs Used To Treat Anxiety: Antidepressants

Many medications originally approved for the treatment of depression have been found to relieve symptoms of anxiety. Antidepressants are the first choice rather than anti-anxiety drugs since they are easier to get off of, than the anti-anxiety drugs which tend to have an anxiety-rebound effect. Antidepressants are often prescribed instead of benzodiazepines because the risk for dependency and abuse is smaller. Anti anxiety drugs, particularly antidepressants are often used in combination with other methods of treatment and therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy. However, antidepressants take up to 4 to 6 weeks to begin relieving symptoms, so they aren't helpful if first taken during a anxiety or panic attack. But antidepressants come with risks of their own. All antidepressants are required by the FDA to carry a warning about the risk of suicidal thoughts, hostility, and agitation. There is also the risk that antidepressants will cause an increase, rather than a decrease, in depression and anxiety. Effexor, Remeron, Cymbalta, and Desyrel are atypical antidepressants which can be used to treat anxiety problems.

Anti anxiety drug and treatment options come in a wide variety, which provides people dealing with anxiety disorders a wide range of therapeutic treatment alternatives. For those interested in alternative medicine, there are a variety of herbal treatments, natural anxiety techniques such as Joe Barry's "One Move Technique". that have been used and proven to work by thousands of sufferer's.
